Contributions to MPEG

International Standards supported by CONVERGENCE

  • MPEG-21 – The project designed and developed a solution that enables the explicit declaration of semantically unambiguous relationships between digital resources, employing structured semantic descriptors and ontologies, based on MPEG-21. The devised mechanism has become part of the MPEG-21 international standard, specifically in the form of an Amendment to MPEG-21 part 3: DII Digital Item Identification, which introduces Semantic Relationships. This amendment (ISO/IEC 21000-3:2003/Amd.2) has been approved, after a many steps evaluation, at MPEG 102nd meeting, 2012/10/19, and is now part of the standard.
  • MPEG-M – The project has strongly contributed to writing and design of the MPEG-M international standard. Over 20 input documents, and output documents for all parts, were produced (see following section) together with the MPEG-M working group and CONVERGENCE personnel are editors of all parts of MPEG-M ISO/IEC 23006. The status of the various parts is as follows:
    – the part 1: Architecture: is International Standard approved at MPEG102 (2012/10/19)
    – other parts, part 2: MPEG extensible middleware (MXM) API, part 3: Conformance and reference software, part 4: Elementary Services and part 5: Service aggregation, are final versions of the International Standard and will be approved at MPEG104 (2013/04/22)

Contributions to ETSI

CONVERGENCE contributed to Work Item number 3 of the ETSI MOI ISG. MOI’s (Measurement Ontology for IP traffic) Industry Specification Group central task is to specify an ontology for IP traffic measurements. See http://www.etsi.org/about/how-we-work/industry-specification-groups for a list and a description of the concept behind ISGs. See http://portal.etsi.org/portal/server.pt/community/MOI/346 for a direct link to MOI.

WI#3 of MOI provides the high level structure description of the ontology for interfacing interoperable solutions in (currently vendor-specific and heterogeneous) infrastructures and tools for IP traffic measurement.

CONVERGENCE contributed a specific chapter on “Information-Centric Networks and Statistics Collection”, dealing with ubiquitous in-network caching and some challenges it poses in terms of monitoring and collection of statistics.

  • Final version of MOI WI#3 has been accepted by members in MOI meeting#12 of 20/03/2013, and is in the approval phase (just editorial changes) of ETSI.
  • Results of MOI and specifically WI#3 have been presented at 3rd ETSI Future Networks Workshop, 9-11 April 2013, Sophia Antipolis, France, “Session 9: Enabling Techniques”.
